Quintero, Isabel and Zeke Peña. (2018). Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide. Los Angeles: Getty Publications.
Graphic Novel, Biography, Young Adult.
This graphic novel of the life of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide is intriguing and dazzling. Written for young adults, all readers will find the book an interesting read.
Quintero and Peña incorporate Iturbide's photographs and motifs into the story and drawings. The book, divided into sections based on different periods of Iturbide's professional life, takes the reader along with Iturbide on her photographic journeys throughout her native Mexico, from the Sonora Desert to Juchitán to Frida Kahlo’s bathroom, to the United States, India, and beyond. Photographic is poetic at times with a deeply personal feeling throughout the stories and image. One can spend much time scouring the drawings and photographs learning even more about this amazing woman's work, inspiration, and life. I was mesmerized by her talent and curiosity.
