Diary of a Reluctant Dreamer

Ledesma, Alberto. (2017). Diary of a Reluctant Dreamer: Undocumented Vignettes from a Pre-American Life. Columbus, OH: Mad Creek Books.

Memoir. Graphic Novel / Comic.

A beautifully written and illustrated series of essays and visual vignettes, this book gives a candid look at the ever-evolving meaning of dreamer from Dr. Ledesma's life. From being brought to the United States with his two sisters, attending UC Berkeley, becoming a U.S. citizen, talking with his daughter about his past, working with today's undocumented students, and more, we learn about the myriad of problems, hopes, wishes, fear, and many other conflicting feelings that Ledesma shares from his own story through his drawings and writings. Also included is an "Undocumented Alphabet" that illustrates twenty-six realities experienced by the undocumented community.

As someone with no firsthand knowledge of being undocumented, I felt I was able to understand a bit more of this different narrative, and I appreciate this opportunity to learn a little more.
